Hi,
Well, today was just pretty cool so it gets one whole email. When I organize my photos I choose the ones I want to keep to remember this trip. I choose way more than I ever send out in these emails. I put them in a special folder and then choose 15 from the favorites to send out to you all. Well, today I choose twice as many as I could email.....it was extraordinary the day we had for sure.
Anyway, it's our last night in New Mexico and today was actually spent in Colorado as the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad travels across state lines a number of times on it's trek from Chama, NM to Antonito, CO. It's a trip of about 65 miles but we only did the half trip to Osier and returned to Chama. I think that it was probably the most beautiful part of the trip but would love to do the entire ride one day. Especially in the fall when the aspens have turned color. There are so many and it must be spectacular.
The train engines were built in 1925 and they are a noisy, dirty but very nostalgic beast. We spent most of our time out in the open car as the weather was glorious (yesterday was not so we were very pleased) and you could see so much more than from our passenger car. The engine uses literally tons of water and at least a couple tons of coal to make all that steam. I took video as well and the sounds (and smells) are very fun.
And did I mention lunch? A wonderful hot lunch was included in the $75 per person price. And was it ever good. We skipped dinner and it's nearly midnight and I'm still not the least bit hungry. Many people we spoke to said it was the BEST scenic railroad ride of it's kind. Highly recommended to all if you're every down this way.
Okay - enuf....to bed for me. Colorado tomorrow....but it's COLD.
