Subject: Acapulco Fun
Hello All,
Well, we finally made it out of Zihuatanejo on March 7th..... with mixed feelings for sure. We had a great time there and will miss our friends but life must go on. So on we went to Acapulco.
What a drive! We have not taken many of the toll roads, because of our route, but we actually got charged for a toll road that was just newly under construction on this trip! About twenty miles of gravel and dust that will one day be a nice road.... oh well. I guess the first thing they build is the toll booth! Sorta makes sense!
The drive was beautiful in parts though. Long ocean beaches that take your breath away.
We camped about eight or ten miles north of Acapulco at Pie de la Cuesta, a resort community with a thin stretch of land between the sea and a large fresh water lagoon. Lovely place. From there we took the bus into the city several times. The first time was to an older part of town called Caleta where we had lunch and watched the beach vendors and folks on the beach. One of my favorite things to do.... And, of course, we had lunch which is Mike's favorite. We were both happy.
We stayed a week at our little spot right on the beach. We had a really nice lady neighbor lady from Montreal who was a former RCMP. And coincidently, her former boss was someone we had met at the last RV spot in Zihuatanejo! She said he and his wife had pulled in a week or so before we arrived and she was so surprised to see him after ten or so years. And the fact that we knew him made the world seem even smaller!
One day we took the bus to Costco which is about quite a ways south of town. We took several different buses with a stop at beautiful Bahia Marques for lunch. Tons of beach vendors are roaming this busy beach that boasts over seventy restaurants! This really darling little girl came over and was admiring the lunch that I was too full to finish eating so I offered it to her. And she took it gladly! Different experience but, hey, what the heck? Made us both happy!!
We made our way to Costco and were planning on taking the bus back "home" but this little volkswagon cab wanted our fare badly and talked us into riding with him. He wanted 350 pesos at first and he finally said he'd take us for 160 so we said, why not? It would have cost 60 on the bus and it was about 40 miles away during rush hour so a good deal. We talked with Enrique on the way and found out that he lives at Pie de la Cuesta and was going there anyway so really wanted to just finish his day with whatever fare he could get. Again, we were all happy! Traffic was awful and we probably got back about an hour earlier than we would have on the bus. Thing is, we would have bought more at Costco had we known that we were taking a cab back!!
Acapulco is a lovely spot but is an old, old city that could use some cleaning up. I think it's the only place we've been that seemed a little under the weather. We were on the bus and the police stopped the driver and tried to get money from him! The guy sitting in front of us was saying (in Spanish) "corruption". I guess the bus driver told the cop to stuff it and drove off! But this was an isolated incidence. And, hey, the fact that the bus driver stood up for himself was cool.
We enjoyed one more Pie de la Cuesta sunset and then drove on south out of Guerrero..... the last couple photos were taken on the road to Puerto Escondito in the Mexican state of Oaxaca.
More to come......
Aloha,
