Beautiful Guanajuato

 Subject: Guanajuato

Me again,

You're probably all sick of colonial Mexican towns by now but here is yet another, Guanajuato in the state of Guanajuato.

We went there yesterday on the bus from San Miguel de Allende.  It's about fifty miles away.  When we got to the outskirts, we were sort of wondering if we were at the right place.  There was a Holiday Inn and an Applebee's!!  But we took the couple mile cab ride down into the original historic town and knew that our trip was going to be well worth the effort.

We traveled through a tunnel system in the cab that was amazing.  It was all old and rough looking - like it was blasted away into the rocks, which it probably was!  It had all kinds of intersections and roads going off at odd angles.....really different.  And there are sidewalks with lots of pedestrians walking inside as well.  The town is built in a low place between high hills and is restricted in size once you get down in there.  And it is very beautiful.  The churches, the playhouses, the monuments, the flowers, just everywhere you looked was so interesting and pretty.  I took about 200 photos, so the ones included here are just a sampling at best.

And it seemed quieter than other places we've visited.  No horn honking or loud music - almost felt like everyone was humbled just to be there and acted appropriately.  We loved it and plan to put it on the list for the future except that we'd like to spend more time.  It's a place that you just want to sit in and soak it up and we didn't have time for that.  We did have a nice lunch so sat for a bit but mostly we walked our legs off for about three hours and then took the bus back to San Miguel.  Mike said his eyes hurt from seeing so much.

We're off to the supermarket now for a few things.  It's our last night here and we plan to go into town and have dinner and see what it's like at night in San Miguel de Allende.  We've only about 650 miles to drive to Texas but we do plan one more interesting town on the way that I'm sure I'll write about.....Real de Catorce.  It's an old silver mining town with tunnels and hills and is the location of where "The Mexican" with Julia Roberts was filmed.  So we'll be in touch....

Adios for the momentito,

Gayle and Mike (he is actually awake and reading but did just wake up from a nap!)
