Eastern California travels 2011 #8

Hello,

We’ve been a little out of touch cause we be campin’! We spent the last couple weeks mostly in the Inyo National Forest. Our friend (and adopted daughter) Debbie and her husband Todd live in Bishop, CA and Debbie is working for the forest service. Her job is a traffic study and since she needed to be “out in the field” counting cars and people, we all went camping together!

Debbie and I met in 2000 when she was parked across the dock from me at KoOlina Marina on Oahu. Mike showed up later in the same marina as well. And the rest is history! She and Todd met some me later and have been married for almost 10 years and we’re going for 9 in January!

They moved to Florida, and it had been quite some me since we’ve seen each other so it was very fun. The first photo is of Lake Sabrina, where we went to breakfast one beautiful morning. The pooch is Lacey, Debbie’s dog. Sadly, they had just lost Madeline a few days before we got to Bishop. We knew Madeline on Oahu and we’re all sad that she had to go.

Lake Sabrina is way up at about 8,000 feet so it was cold. And it’s funny that the lake isn’t full because most everything else certainly is this year. The rivers are raging and there’s still lots of snow in the mountains. We camped at June Lake for a few days and took turns feeding each other. We had beautiful sunsets over the Sierras!

There was a place to shoot nearby so we took Mike’s shotgun out there and tried it out for the first me. Now I’ll know how to shoot a bear as it’s coming through the camper door! Look out. Then Mike and I went to Convict Lake. It’s one of our favorite places.....see the big mountain in the photo with the front of our truck? That’s Convict. We actually took our kayaks out on the lake all the way to the far end. There is so much runoff that it’s practically a 1/4 mile wide stream coming into the lake instead of just a couple creeks like normal. The mountains surrounding the lake are stunning. Debbie and Todd didn’t camp with us at Convict but they came up for an afternoon and took us to a hot spring. You need local knowledge to find the place. We took champagne and really enjoyed. The water was hot but not so hot that you had to keep ge ng out. Beau ful surroundings and interesting characters made for a memorable afternoon.

We then drove up to Mamouth for Bar B Q at Angel’s. It was great! Thanks for the fun, you two. Some of the photos are Debbie’s, by the way. Go a give credit you know.

We drove on up 395 and found a nice camp spot near Walker and stayed a couple nights. Nothing much going on except chipmunks and birds and campfires. Lots of pine trees and a very relaxing kind of place. We continued up toward Carson City, NV and are currently parked at a casino in nearby Minden.

We had lots of shopping to do and there’s Costco, Super Wal Mart, etc. And, most importantly, Mike wanted to go eat at the JT Bar which is a wonderful Basque restaurant that he used to frequent from his family cabin at Lake Tahoe. The food was super good.

Tomorrow we are going up to Lake Tahoe to visit both of Mike’s brother’s (along with a niece and a nephew) at the Hughes family cabin. It was sold back in the early 70’s to a friend of the family and they are loaning it to us for a few days. The place holds many fond memories for Mike (he and his father and brother’s built the place) and I’m excited to see the inside. We’ve only driven by in years past. And it’s very special that we have this chance to stay there because the cabin is going to be sold.

We were going to start heading north right after the brother visit but a happy event is going to delay us for a little longer. Mike’s stepson, Oliver, and his longtime girlfriend, Natalie, are getting married in Oakland on July 11th. We couldn’t miss that! So, we’ll drive back down 395 and go over Sonora Pass from East to West. We have wanted to do that for years and years so here’s our chance. We’ll go to Mike’s brother, Roger’s, and park so we can borrow his car for the trip down to Oakland. Aloha for now, Gayle and Mike
