Hola Amigos and Amigas,
We’ve been hanging out in Mazatlan for eleven days so far. Probably be a couple weeks before we’re done. We first stayed a bit north of town for nine nights at a place called Mar de Villas. Very pretty and right on the beach. We were parked close as you can get to the beach because we’re a small rig and we fit in the last spot left in the park. You can hear the ocean but there is a villa between us and the palms and beach so you can’t really see it, thought it’s quite close. Easy to take the bus to where ever or a pulmania which is like a little open car that they use here for taxis.
We moved to the park in town called Mar Rosa and it is right on the beach and we can see the waves from our third row spot. No one is directly ahead of us in row two and one. Tonight will be our third night which is all we paid for so far but I’ve got a feeling we won’t leave tomorrow....just a feeling. We’re super lazy. And the people are nice. And the food is good and cheap. And did I mention that we’re lazy?
The peso is so low to the dollar.....over 20 pesos to the dollar. Last time we were down it was 12 to the dollar. It really makes things cheap. And we’re tipping more, etc. just because it’s good to help out. Most the people we see are working in restaurants and seem to be doing pretty well. As we get further south it will be less Norte Americanos and I’m looking forward to that. It’s more like “real” Mexico. We went out to a fairly fancy Italian dinner the other night and with wine and pupus it was only about $38. We spend that much on lunch easily at home....at just a everyday kind of place. So we’re eating out quite a bit. It’s such a pain to go grocery shopping to make meals but we are enjoying going to the market downtown for fresh items and to see the local color. Mike cooks maybe half the time.
Photos of the cathedral and the kids are downtown. I think we’re heading there this afternoon for a bit again. It’s 10 pesos to ride the bus and it’s fun. Today is weird because we woke up to fog....fog? In Mexico? Then it cleared up all sunny and now it’s foggy again at noon. Global warming??? lol. I guess I have seen fog here before but it’s not usual.
We’ve walked on beaches and eaten lots of different food and had some margaritas. Yesterday was a day to clean up the inside of the camper because it really needed it....so dusty at that last place. And we sent out our laundry and got everything back all clean. It was a huge amount of dirty stuff including the entire bedding with quilt and bedpad and all....even had a rug in there. Twenty bucks. A laundromat would have been far more in the states and these guys picked it up, brought everything back all folded nicely. Can’t beat that, and it’s one of the luxuries we afford ourselves when we’re here. Living in a camper for months and months I think we deserve it.
Lots of the photos are of sunsets. They have been spectacular. Both places we’ve stayed they have a happy hour at sunset and everyone shows up. Here they have a little palapa and a table that we sit and chat at for an hour or so. There’s the odd American but mostly Canadians....it’s always like that. They’re great people.
I’ve yet to hear anyone say squat about American politics. The Mexicans are just as nice. Only thing we’ve seen at all was some protestors against the high price of fuel in Mexico now. It is up from when we were last here but with the dollar up we’re actually paying less than we did three years ago. We figured it out and it’s about $3 for a gallon of diesel. Not terrible for us but it’s a lot of pesos for the people here. Pemex has a monopoly on fuel and it’s just the way it is.
Had a massage one day. I left a 20 percent tip and the total was $25. I should get another. A gal here told me that she’s going today to have a four handed massage....two people working on you at the same time! For $14 Canadian.....and their dollar is weaker than ours. Amazing. Both the price and the idea of a double massage!
Cat is doing well. Takes a lot of siestas and is up on the dashboard of the truck doing so as I write. She escapes once in a while but stays close and we notice her absence right away, open the door and she jumps back in the camper. The other day I had her out on a leash and this little bitty dog came running down the road and she climbed a palm tree lickety-split. That dog wasn’t even interested in her but she was taking no chances.
I’m still suffering with sciatica or something. I don’t know if it’s a bit better or if I’m just dealing better but am managing to walk some. And last night I slept good for a change. It’s easier to cope when you can sleep. I’m determined to keep on keeping on though I will admit a few times I’ve just sat and cried. Mike is well. We’re all three lazy and that is all.
Bye for now.....The Hawaiian Mexicans
